Hunger Is Not a Disease

And…it’s Walmart time again!

“Hello.”

Each of us  working for the pantry outside the Walmart has a different introduction we use when we speak to the shoppers.  We’ve been outside the Walmart monthly since last fall.  The only month we didn’t stand outside the entrance was December when the Salvation Army puts out its volunteer ringing the bell.

In February, the temperature was 2 degrees.  Standing outside the store in July, we all commented that the broiling heat was better than the cold.

But, really, in our hearts of hearts, we don’t care what day it is, what the time is, what the temperature is.  What matters is that we’re outside the entrance and it’s our favorite place to be.

No, I’m not lying.  I totally adore being outside the Walmart.  We’ve made friends with everyone:

customers

employees

tradesmen.

On Friday, a young couple came up to show off their brand new baby who wasn’t even here yet at our September visit.

One of my favorite people at the Walmart is a homeless woman who always manages to bring us a can of food.

Employees drop by throughout the day to see if we’re okay.

In the midst of all the community, we’re raising $$$ to buy food to keep the pantry open another month.  And…that’s no small job.  Our census rises every month.  Last month, we served 800 people.

For a young pantry, just a little over a year old, to have the food and funds to feed 800 people is something to be extremely proud of.  Reservoir Food Pantry volunteers can do this because they know how to focus on the task at hand.

Prasida, Bob, Louise, Barbara, and Garrett know how to focus on feeding the people.  The focus is completely “with us” all three days.

This focus offers opportunity to:

really enjoy what we’re doing.

set goals.

bond with the people we meet.

keep our pantry open.

As the coordinator, I’m often asked:  “Who sponsors your pantry?”

Thank you to everyone at the Walmart, both customers and employees.  Without you, we wouldn’t be able to feed 800+ people every month.  When we feed the hungry, we strengthen our whole community.  We couldn’t do this without your support.

Books! Books! Books! – For a Food Pantry?

One thing no one ever discusses in the pantry is the past.  They speak about things that happened last week or so but never beyond.  Whatever happened before they find the pantry is just not on the agenda.  As holidays approach, no one ever speaks about the Thanksgivings, Christmases, Hanukkahs, Passovers they had before their lives spun out of control.  No one ever mentions  that there isn’t enough money to get Passover food.  No one ever asks a child what Santa is going to bring.

“Hi Thurman.  How’re you doing?  I know we haven’t spoken in awhile but I’m wondering if your pantry can use some books?”

“Of course!  We offer food for the body and now we’ll have books for the soul. ” What could be better?

So, within a very short time, my car was parked outside the door of Lisa Library in Kingston getting stuffed with boxes of beautiful, educational, fun, adorable, new books for children.  While I was still pinching myself to be sure it was really happening, we headed out for the pantry and stacked them for distribution on Monday.

This is a real gift…a prayer answered.  This time of year I’m always searching for things people can  use as holiday gifts.  It goes without saying that gifts are just not in anyone’s budget right now.  (Not in the pantry world, anyway.)

We  have families with children coming to our pantry.    They’ll  go home (wherever and whatever that is) with a special treat this week.

We also have  grandparents with not one penny for a holiday gift for grandchildren.  Well, now, thanks to Elisa Gee and Lisa Library, these grandchildren have a chance to get a gift from a grandparent.

In Search Of

 

Pantry HND 3Diane slowly walked the two blocks to the pantry every Thursday morning  to work in the hallway a couple of hours until she got enough energy to walk home.  “Don’t forget your roll of toilet paper, Judith.  We’ve got hand cream today.  Can you use that or would you prefer tooth paste?”

When she finally couldn’t work in the hallway anymore we had no one for the station, so we relied on Robyn who gracefully sat in front of the Items of Dignity closet and helped shoppers choose needed items.  She lived in nearby Mt. Tremper.  Her living situation seemed to be somewhat precarious because every few months she looked for a new place to live.  I think she lived in her car a couple of times.

During shopping lulls, Robyn addressed envelope after envelope after envelope for the fundraising letters we sent out several times each year.  So, really, Robyn worked two jobs in the hallway:  Items of Dignity and Fundraising.

One afternoon Robyn came to my home.  “Phoebe died yesterday Thurman.  I need a place to bury her.”  We found a quiet place in my garden under a Japanese Willow.  She and Barry dug a grave and placed her beloved cat, wrapped in a rug, in the freshly dug earth.  After sprinkling dirt  over Phoebe, Barry emptied a large bag of mulch over the grave.  I offered a prayer.

The next morning, as I walked by the area, I saw a cross and a little bouquet of flowers  on the grave.

Leticia, our 99-pound wonder, seems to the casual observer not to be a candidate for heavy lifting.  However, she shows up on Tuesday mornings ready for shelving action.  A retired teacher, she doesn’t stock shelves.  She packs them.    No box is too large, No case  is too heavy.  A tiny Latina whirlwind, Leticia gives energy to all of us.

Our pantry shed is small so we rely on her expertise to have enough food available for the shoppers on pantry day.  When Leticia finishes packing a shelf, we can’t even get a paper clip in the extra space.  Go Leticia!

No one wakes up one day and says “I think I’ll go down to the local food pantry and volunteer”.  People spending time in pantries, either as volunteers or shoppers, travel down a path to get there.  For the most part, the people seek healing on some level:

A job has disappeared and they need a grounding activity as they seek the next job.

They need a respite from another situation.

They need to heal from an illness.

They seek connection to the community.

Food Pantries and Food Banks everywhere rely on the support and dedication of  friends and neighbors to keep doors open.  When you volunteer to feed the hungry, you share time and talents.  Your skills are vital to our mission.

No matter where you live, be it Upstate New York, Southern California or anywhere in between, there’s a Food Pantry or a Food Bank nearby with  volunteer opportunities.  Chances are pretty good that your schedule can be met.  Get involved!  You’ll make a difference.

At the Reservoir Food Pantry, we need people to:

organize a food or fund drive during the year to benefit the many households we serve,

drive  packages of food to home bound people,

work in the pantry during opening hours,

help prepare mailers which will go out several times during the year  (This activity happens during pantry hours at the Reservoir Food Pantry),

work in our new thrift shop.

Volunteers working at the Reservoir Food Pantry, or at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York in Latham, or the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley in Cornwall-on-Hudson, come from all walks of life:

students,

seniors,

business people,

church members,

service organizations.

If you know an employee in an area school, we are looking to organize a school food drive for the Reservoir Food Pantry.

An Open Letter to the Members of the Olive Town Board

We had a wonderful day in the pantry last Monday:

Beautiful weather,

Gorgeous produce,

Generous canned goods from the Food Bank on brand new shelves in our shed just down the hill from the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

WE BEGAN OUR JOURNEY UP THE HILL IN THE PARKING LOT OF THE WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT.  You’ll never know how much it meant to us to be in the parking lot up the hill.  We spent months looking at every available empty space along 28.  We went over to Olivebridge even, looking to see what was over there.

Several places  would have made gorgeous pantries…except for the rent.  We just didn’t have what it takes (and still don’t have), to pay the rent.

I was about to give up and just realize that we were destined to be a take-out pantry forever…until you came up with the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

SO, WE WENT FOR IT.   We set up  tables under canopies in the parking lot.  We moved a bit closer to Route 28 each week because of the wind on the hill.  By the time Beecher Smith agreed to share his space with us, we were almost to the road.

BUT FOR YOUR GENEROSITY, WE WOULD HAVE NEVER GOTTEN A SPACE.    We’re eternally grateful.  We’re feeding people; serving more seniors than the adults and children combined.   Half of the households we feed are home bound.

We are definitely tax dollars at work.  And, we don’t waste even one penny.

WHEN WE FEED PEOPLE IN THE RESERVOIR FOOD PANTRY AREA, WE STRENGTHEN THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY AS WE ASSIST THE MOST VULNERABLE.

We Got Electricity in the Reservoir Food Pantry!

 

A lot happened last Saturday.  While some volunteers worked at the Boiceville IGA food drive, others were working on the shed:

Wiring installation was completed.

Trak lighting went into the ceiling.

The new second-hand cold case now has a place next to the shelving so we’ll have a place for yogurt and other foods needing refrigeration.

The desk was moved out of the pantry to the new office area.

LET’S CELEBRATE THE FUTURE OF THE RESERVOIR FOOD PANTRY TOGETHER.

While that might not seem like such a big deal for a country pantry shed, it’s a huge event for the coordinator trying to make us winter ready.  All in all, it was glorious! After celebrating our first birthday only a couple of weeks ago,   we’re thrilled to begin  our new year with a fully equipped pantry.

One year ago, we had nothing but a dream.  I’m amazed…amazed at what a group of volunteers have accomplished.

We’re ready now.  We’re energetic.  We’ve got a pantry.  We’ve got shoppers.  We’ve got volunteers.  We’ve got food.  We’ve got shelving.  We’ve got an entrance ramp.  We’ve got heat.  We’ve got a refrigerator.   We’re hopeful for what is to come.  We look forward to a busy and prosperous year as we offer a 3-day-supply of food to hungry people in the area.  We strengthen the entire community as we feed the most vulnerable.

FOOD PANTRY BLOG: They Came Up on Bicycles

SHE HAD A BACKPACK.    He had more of a knapsack.  They rode over hesitantly, cautiously, on bicycles.

“Hi” I said in my most inviting tone.  “Welcome to the pantry.  Have you been here before?”  Actually, I knew the answer but wanted to help them feel more at ease.

“No.”

“COME ON OVER TO THE TABLE.   Sign  in.  All we need is your name and the number of people in your household.  Then, start shopping at the end of the table here and work yourself down the line of food.  Take all the produce you can eat in 3 days.  We’ve got onions, carrots, greens, oranges, tomatoes.  You’ll notice that much of our produce is labeled “organic.”  Take one each of the different canned items.  Take a can of crushed tomatoes,  juice,  green beans,  organic vegetable stock.  Be sure and take some Bread Alone bread.”

They walked over, gently touched the food as if in a museum store.  Quietly, between them, they argued over what they could carry home.  It seemed to them we were offering more than they could get home.

“How did you hear about us?” I asked?  I didn’t expect an answer.  They were too uncomfortable.  “We hope you’ll come every week.  We open every Monday at 2 p.m.  And…don’t forget to tell your friends, relatives, neighbors, enemies.  We’re brand new here and trying to spread the word.”

A TYPICAL FIRST FIRST, THEY ACTUALLY MANAGED THE EXPERIENCE QUITE WELL.

They finally agreed on what they could carry and headed off home, wherever and whatever that was.

Most people shopping at our pantry can be labeled resource poor.  The resource poor routinely choose between food and other necessities:

food and housing payments,

food and medicine/medical care,

food and transportation,

food and gasoline.

People in the resource poor category are also food insecure.  They lack, at times, enough food for an active, health life for the household members.

According to the Feeding America survey (I participated in this survey, by the way), about 75% of those shopping at pantries are food insecure and 80% of those households have one or more children.

Food insecurity comes in 2 categories:  food insecurity and very low food security, which is a more serious lack of access to food.

When we discuss very low food security, we know that some have limited access to grocery stores.  This means their food comes from gas station food markets, convenience stores, and pharmacy grocery shelves.

Woodstock and Boiceville are such places.  In Woodstock, two very upscale stores sell organic foods:  Sunflower Natural Foods Market and Sunfrost.  Both Sunflower and Sunfrost also offer non organic foods of the fresh, frozen, canned, and bagged variety.

Both claim to offer non GMO foods as well although, for the life of me, I don’t understand how a merchant can claim  such a thing.  Between the two of these stores, Sunflower has more organic produce and food products than Sunfrost.

Woodstock Meats offers products from local farms which, to me, seems to be a more honest label.  No one is ever fooled into thinking s/he is getting organic food when the case is otherwise.

The Bear Cub Market next to the Bearsville Post Office is an upscale market offering what the purveyor considers to be the very best available of whatever it is he sells.  He stocks his shelves with canned, boxed, fresh, refrigerated products.

Both Woodstock Meats and Bear Cub are totally honest about their products.   No one is fooled into believing that something is what it is not.

For those on limited budgets, food is available at the CVS, Cumberland Farms, and Rite Aid Pharmacy in Woodstock.

Olives and the Citgo Station in Shokan out Boiceville way offer foods also.

Olives offers food for humans as well as pets and a small assortment of toys and household items.  Yogurt and cheeses are available in the dairy case.  They also sell deli sandwiches.

The food mart at the Citgo station across the street carries more beer, chips, candy, and olives than Olives.

Two grocery stores are in the area:  Hurley Ridge Market in West Hurley and the Boiceville IGA in Boiceville.  For the person whose transportation is limited , these stores are inaccessible.

After Superstorm Sandy, the Boiceville IGA was closed for a couple of months because it had water damage.

But, back to the couple on the bicycles.  They  shop at the Reservoir Food Pantry often now.  They’re much more comfortable with the experience.  And, their extremely limited budget has been eased a bit by our offerings.

School Days Are Here Again! – feeding the hungry

NEVER IN MY WILDEST DREAMS DID I EVER  THINK I WOULD  WRITE THIS BLOG POST.  NEVER.

Hunger is a condition.  It accompanies malnourishment.  As Mark Bittman of the New York Times said:  “Hunger can lead to starvation; starvation to death.

School supplies, school clothes, shoes, coats, sweaters, lunches, snacks.

WHERE ARE ALL THESE THINGS TO COME FROM FOR THE HOUSEHOLD WHERE THE ONLY THING IN ABUNDANCE IS THE INSIDE OF AN EMPTY REFRIGERATOR?

Nationwide, 17 million children go to bed at night hungry.  In many of these households, parents and older siblings go hungry so the younger ones can eat.

FOOD INSECURE SCHOOL CHILDREN HAVE A MUCH HARDER TIME LEARNING THAN THEIR WELL FED CLASSMATES.   Statistics from the Feeding America survey tell us that one child in five eats only as school.  Food Banks try to fill this gap by offering backpack programs in tandem with Food Pantries and Elementary Schools.  Lucky is the child leaving school   Friday afternoons with a backpack filled with nourishing food to eat over the weekend.

There are few to no Backpack Programs in our area so the volunteers at the Reservoir Food Pantry work overtime to secure enough food for families with school children.

Only 2 weeks ago pantry volunteers were outside the Kingston Walmart for three days soliciting peanut butter and jelly for school sandwiches.  These volunteers will return  on September 4th, 5th, and 6th to ask for food for school lunches.

On Saturday, September 27th, we’ll be outside the Boiceville IGA asking for food for school children also.

If you can drop by either of these places with a donation, we’ll be extremely grateful.  If you can’t make it and want to send a donation, please send it to Reservoir Food Pantry, P.O.Box 245, Boiceville, NY 12412.  Either  way:   dropping by the store or sending a check, we’re grateful.  The food will be used to   feed hungry children.

CHILDREN LEARN BETTER WHEN THEY RECEIVE NEEDED NUTRITIOUS FOOD.

What Hunger Looks Like in Woodstock

POLITICIANS THIS YEAR POSTURE ABOUT CUTTING BENEFITS AND INFRASTRUCTURE SPENDING TO PRESERVE OUR NATION.    Newspaper and magazine articles regularly discuss how we now have more super wealthy CEOs and individual Americans than we have ever had before.  The growing number of poor is largely ignored.

More Americans live at or below the poverty line than ever before in the history of our country according to a Feeding America survey.  Where do these people come from?  They come from the poor and middle classes.

THEY MAKE UP A NEW GROUP:  THE STRUGGLING POOR.

In September, 1990, when the Good Neighbor Food Pantry opened, President Bush and Soviet President Gorbachev met in Helsinki to discuss the Persian Gulf crisis.  Only 13.5% of our nation’s people lived below the poverty line.  That percentage represented about 33.5 million people according to infoplease.com.  Today, it’s estimated that 15% of Americans live at or below the poverty line.  That number is about 46.2 million.

AS THE COORDINATOR OF A SMALL TOWN FOOD PANTRY, I SAW THE SHOPPER CENSUS CLIMB FROM TWENTY-FIVE PERSONS PER WEEK PRIOR TO 2008 TO 500 PER WEEK BY 2013.

For years, the pantry served mostly single homeless men and Woodstock’s colorful characters on Thursdays.  By the time we were serving over 500 people weekly, we were giving a three-day-supply of food to families, households, and individuals in many categories:  artists, crazy poor, elderly poor, generational poor, homebound, homeless, ill poor, infant poor, messed-up poor, musicians, poets, newly poor, resource poor, situational poor, struggling poor, terminally ill poor, transient poor, underemployed poor, unemployed poor, veterans, writers.

AS TIME PASSED, I SAW MORE AND MORE HARD WORKING PEOPLE STRUGGLE WITH THE REALITY OF NOT HAVING ANY FOOD MONEY AFTER THEY PAID THE RENT AND BOUGHT GAS TO GET TO THEIR MINIMUM WAGE JOBS.   I served people just laid off from a job who I knew would never work again.  Seriously ill people came for food when they had no money left because every dime had gone to pay the medical bills.  Traumatized people came in when their homes were foreclosed or destroyed because of Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy.

On a more personal level I met alcoholics, artists, child abusers, children, crazies, the disabled, druggies, drunks, elderly men and women, hardworking people juggling two and three jobs, homeless, mentally ill, messed-up people, musicians, people battling terminal illness, politicians, schizophrenics, thieves, veterans, Woodstock’s colorful characters, writers,  various church people, and pantry volunteers.

When I meet with other professionals in the food pantry industry, we all agree that we’ve never seen anything as bad as now.  Don Csaposs, a retired board member of the Food Bank of Northeastern New York recently described our situation very aptly when he said:  “We are living in an upside down world.”

NOW, IN 2014, POLITICIANS PONTIFICATE ABOUT THE POOR:  LAZY, IRRESPONSIBLE.

The average wait for a three-day-supply of food (which must be stretched to last a week) in the pantry hallway is almost an hour.  The building committee allows no chairs for the shoppers to sit on.  In the winter, there is no heat in the building except for the body heat generated by people crowded in the hallway.

AND, THIS WAIT IS ONCE THEY ARE INSIDE THE BUILDING.    Many wait outside for an hour or so in freezing weather, snow, sleet, rain, 100 degree heat, before the pantry opens.  It doesn’t matter.  The three-day-supply of food is gone and they have no money for more.

The three-day limit is a Hunger Prevention Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) guideline.  And, it’s a practical one.  The fresh produce distributed isn’t going to last much more than three days because it’s been diverted from a landfill on its way to the pantry.

While receiving a three-day supply of food, they are doing without a lot:  salt, pepper, sugar, flour, fresh milk, cooking oil, coffee.

Often these people, like members of the Flores family work seven days a week – every week.  Every family member has more than one job.  They manage to bring in enough funds to pay the rent for a cramped apartment and to buy gas.

No insurance.

No food.

No clothes.

WHEN I THINK ABOUT IT, I REALIZE EVERYTHING THEY GET IS RECYCLED:

The apartment they rent is old and rundown.

Their pickup is definitely used.

The clothing is donated to Family by people who no longer plan to use it.

THE FOOD, LIKEWISE, IS RECYCLED.

The produce, dairy, and bread is all definitely on its way to the landfill when it gets diverted and sent to the Food Bank, then on to our pantry.

The canned goods are diverted at the grocery store from the landfill.  Cans are dented, outdated.   Some have no labels.

The boxed goods are the worst…especially the crackers.  A box of crackers is often a box of cracker crumbs.

NO MATTER, PEOPLE ARE GRATEFUL FOR WHAT THEY GET.   It’s better than nothing and no one ever complains.

Eat – Share – Give – at the Reservoir Pantry in Boiceville, New York

When we opened the Reservoir Food Pantry in September 2013, we served about 50 households  the first month. That, in itself was a large number.  This  June, 2014, we served 450 households consisting of 429 adults, 329 seniors, and 207 children.

ADD THOSE NUMBERS TOGETHER, AND THE TOTAL APPROACHES 1000 PEOPLE.

Our food pantry is supported by an all volunteer group of people from the community at large. We’ve received much help from local businesses: Boiceville IGA, Boiceville Inn, Bread Alone, Roberts Auction, Wastewater Treatment Plant.
We’ve received help from local friends and neighbors who  help our mission.  We’re proud of the way our pantry volunteers have responded in these hard times.

WE ARE ALL ONE TRAGEDY AWAY FROM LIFE ALTERING CIRCUMSTANCES.  Sometimes it’s a health issue, an accident, the loss of a family member or a hurricane.

The gift you give makes a significant impact, helping us provide much needed food to give to people in our area.  You help us transport this food from the food bank to our pantry weekly…a vital part of our pantry operations.

A Food Pantry is a Thing – a Place – a Process

In the case of the Reservoir Food Pantry, its a collection of canopy tents up the hill behind Robert’s Auction House on Route 28 in Boiceville, NY.
But, more importantly, a pantry is also a process.
When a person (group) applies to be an Agency with the Food Bank, the first thing that happens is, essentially, a mountain of paperwork. Included in this paperwork is several pages of rules – guidelines – to be followed.
Examples:
The food only goes to the hungry.
The food cannot be given, bartered, sold traded with another Food Bank Agency.
The food cannot be served at a pantry or other social function.
The food cannot be sold.
The shoppers are to be treated with dignity and respect.
This list goes on and on and on. And, every rule makes sense and is easy to obey provided nobody is out for a scam.
More than the rules, is the process occurring as we, the new pantry volunteers and shoppers, get to know one another. Time and pantry visits are needed by us all to build a pantry community.
For me, a successful pantry offers food as well as a safe haven for everyone, both shoppers and volunteers, where healing begins and continues.
The Reservoir Food Pantry is developing an every-week rhythm that people appreciate, even need.
We gather under the canopies. People walk among the food: apples, oranges, onions, potatoes, carrots, greens, canned soup, canned vegetables, Bread Alone Bread. They choose a three-day supply of food which will last them seven days.
Offering food with respect and dignity and a spirit of community and sharing is essential to this whole process.
More than the food, we all take home a spiritual gift we receive on Monday afternoons. The gift of sharing of oneself feeds the spiritual hunger experienced by mankind.
And, for me, what binds this whole experience together for everyone is the food.
