Thank You for the Small Pains I Get in the Pantry

Lord, you know I do need them, of course.

For each sore shoulder pain or back spasm that goes away after a while:  THANK YOU!

The small pains remind me of all the pantry work that needs to be done every day. When the small pains come around, they remind me to pray for more volunteers.

So, thanks for the sneezing fits and scratchy throats I get every delivery day.

The last time I had a sharp pain on delivery day, I caught myself praying in surprise.  And, guess what!  The entire Roberts family showed up to help.  It was just a miracle – that’s all.

And, one afternoon, I had a shoulder pain during the pantry shift and a volunteer stepped out of the line and helped us all that day.  And, he kept returning every week for several months.

For me, these small pains are reminders that I should ask for help and be ready for it to show up!

What these pains mean is that I should also hold out hope for the coming miracles.

After all, miracles happened and I couldn’t hide from them.  I was in denial for the longest time but, eventually, I had to face facts.  When I finally owned up to their reality, I saw they were special miracles for a food pantry.

Stigmata, relics, icons, and visions weren’t appropriate for the pantry.

Nobody controlled how or when they happened, only whether or not they were seen for what they were.  I wasn’t focused on the miracles because I was busy paying attention to lifting boxes, stocking shelves, filling out forms, driving to the dump with the trash.

And, so, Lord, I promise to try to ask for help when the pantry needs it.

Meanwhile…thank you…and…Amen

Why I work in a pantry…even after all these years.

“This is perfect weather for a flood” she said casually. “It’s good to see the county out cleaning the ditches by the roads. We need to be ready.”
As I write this post, my mind travels back in time to the 1st pantry day after both Hurricane Irene and Super Storm Sandy. I managed a pantry in Woodstock, NY then. What pantry days they were! People came in looking for anything and everything they could find. They were upset, scared, coping with loss. Many had lost everything – car, house, job. They didn’t know where to turn.

Sadly, neither did I. As they filed in the pantry room, they asked questions that I couldn’t answer. So…I referred them to Family of Woodstock down the street. I simply didn’t know what else to do.

So, now I fast forward to the present where I manage a pantry in Boiceville, NY. Residents here are still recovering from Irene and Sandy. At this pantry, I see some of the same people I saw in Woodstock. Recovery is slow.

Reservoir Food Pantry volunteers work to assure that quality food is available for the many individuals and families in Ulster County. They struggle with food insecurity, homelessness, and underemployment. About 40% of our clients are transportation challenged and we deliver food to them.

Hunger comes in several categories in our area:
elderly poor
employed poor
ill poor
infant poor
generational poor
persistent poor
resource poor
situational poor
struggling poor

Regularly, without even a second thought, volunteers at our pantry located in the Ashokan Reservoir area of Upstate New York, work hand-in-glove with UlsterCorp volunteers, Rondout Valley Growers’ Association. Together, they make an an ongoing effort to provide enough food for those struggling daily with hunger.

Now, in 2015, area pantries are working to be a cohesive group with food storage and safety procedures known by everyone. We know, even if no one else does, how much the area hungry and homeless need the food. Hunger alleviation cannot be effectively carried out in a vacuum.

Our success depends on long term commitment and collaboration. We need to be able to escalate services when needed. Volunteers in our group are here for the time and effort necessary to fight hunger and homelessness in our area.

The Freezers Came This Week!

The freezers came this week! These beauties are 20 cu. ft. upright Frigidaires brought over by Snyder’s. We feel very special here at the Reservoir Food Pantry because they will change life in the pantry as we have known it in the past.
EVERY ADDITION TO THE PANTRY CHANGES LIFE HERE DRAMATICALLY BECAUSE WE’RE SUCH A NEW PANTRY. There’s so much going on over here that I have trouble keeping up.
Since September, 2013, we’ve gone from a homeless pantry whose volunteers delivered food to homeless and home bound people. In the first few weeks we were open, over 40 households found us.
Then, we landed a spot outside the Waste Water Treatment Plant, put up a tent, and served the hungry. I vividly remember the Monday afternoon we served 18 households. “Don’t worry” I told everyone. “In no time at all, we’ll be serving 25.” A couple of people looked at me with expressions of total disbelief.
Yesterday we served over 90 households in the pantry shed.
Two weeks ago we got the dumpster.
So now we’ve got
a shed,
a long line van,
a produce room,
freezers,
refrigerators
a dumpster,
a website,
a facebook page,
a free bookstore compliments of Lisa Libraries,
the best volunteers in the world.
We’ve got other things too but I have trouble keeping up.
iT FEELS LIKE WE’RE BEING HURTLED THROUGH TIME SO FAST THAT ALL OF US ARE JUST BARELY HANGING ON.
Only last week I learned that we’re ranked the 9th largest pantry in Ulster County.
“Is that true?” I thought. We’ve only been open a very short time. How did this happen?
But, back to the refrigerators:
We got them because of a collaborative grant request effort of several area pantries under the direction of Michael Berg at Family and Beth McLendon of UlsterCorp.
But, this isn’t the end of the story. It’s more like the beginning of the story…even though the beginning goes back to about 2007 or so when a HPNAP (Hunger Prevention Nutrition Assistance Program) directive offering preference to refrigerator and freezer requests in pantries in our annual HPNAP grant requests.
HPNAP wants us to use freezers and refrigerators because fresh/frozen food is more nutritious than canned. And, when HPNAP wants something, they usually follow through with funds.
Our little Reservoir Food Pantry in Boiceville routinely offers the absolute best, most nutritious, most delicious food possible for our shoppers…thanks to the freezers which go with our refrigerators. Hungry people shopping at our pantry eat fewer and fewer canned foods, many of which are heavy on salt, and dented.
Instead, hungry people shopping at our pantry choose cheese, yogurt, frozen veggies, fruits, meats. They also choose fresh fruits and vegetables brought down weekly by Prasida and Francine from Latham in our lovely long line van.
They take home eggs, milk, butter, and other refrigerated/frozen foods.
With the freezers and refrigerators, our take out packers don’t worry about running out of canned food. Instead, they go to one of the freezers and choose from the selection there.
This is your tax dollars at work. I say “Let’s all vote a raise for the HPNAP people!”

Supermarket Abandonment

Woodstock is a food desert.  Hard to imagine, isn’t it?  Woodstock lacking in anything.  After all, 60% or so of Woodstock’s residents are weekenders with homes in the city.  They venture up  on weekends, hang out and entertain their friends with foods coming from the Sunflower, Sunfrost, the Cub Market.  The main ingredient for their meat dishes most often comes from the well stocked Woodstock Meats.

But, what about the rest of the crowd who live here 7 days per week?  The lucky ones with working automobiles shop at Hurley Ridge Market on 375 in Hurley, the Price Chopper in Saugerties, or one of the other chains in Kingston:  Shoprite, Hannaford’s, Adams Fairacre.

Higher income locals also shop at the Sunflower, Sunfrost, Cub Market.  Additionally, they shop in Saugerties or Kingston at Mother Earth’s.

These upscale shoppers, both locals and weekenders, focus their purchases on all natural, organic. Hudson Valley grown food.  Popular buzz words are organic, non-GMO, Paleo, free range, antibiotic free, gluten free, hormone free, and…you get the picture.

Those who are not vegetarians or vegans also shop at Woodstock Meats and maybe at Adams Fairacre.  The point here is that these shoppers participate in consumption trends associated with their lifestyle and health.  And, with the upscale foods available in Woodstock, they’re able to get anything they want, whenever they want it.

The not-so-lucky live a different way.   The Woodstock resident without a working automobile shops at the CVS, Rite Aid, Cumberland Farms.

The Woodstock resident without a working automobile gets Sunflower products by diving in the dumpster behind the store and by shopping at pantries located at Family of Woodstock, Holy Ascension Monastery, and in the Woodstock Reformed Church.  Some homebound Woodstock residents benefit from Sunflower’s benevolency with produce and bread donated regularly to Meals on Wheels.  These meals are delivered to their homes throughout the week for $3.00 per meal.

In years past, the Grand Union was extremely popular in Woodstock.  Community groups held raffles, Girl Scouts sold cookies, and neighbors visited with one another while shopping.  After snow storms, everyone went to Grand Union, shopped for milk, butter, and eggs, and swapped snow stories.

It was indispensable for the elderly and those without cars.  In 2001, the Grand Union closed and CVS got the space.  In typical Woodstock fashion, residents took to the streets with demonstrations.  But, it was to no avail.  On April 11, 2001, Woodstock became a food desert.

The result?  Many local people walking on the sidewalks of Woodstock today don’t have enough $$$ to purchase a sufficient supply of nutritious food.  Food insufficiency is also known as food insecurity.  More people than we realize deal with this situation on a daily basis.

Without access to nutritious food, they suffer from overconsumption.  When a person eats too much of the wrong thing and too little of the right thing, hunger, poverty, and diseases such as diabetes overlap and connect.

For those of you who believe the fault is entirely that of the hungry, poverty stricken person:  please remember that the community is as much to blame as the individual.  People eat what they have access to.  They don’t eat what they can’t get.  Less prestigious stores in Woodstock offer too few choices of healthy and affordable food.  They offer  packaged food rich in fat, sugar, salt, preservatives, artificial coloring, artificial flavoring, pesticides.

As the wealthy and privileged shop for the best available food and adapt the latest food and health trends to their diets, the lower, less privileged class is left further and farther behind.  They will probably never catch up.

Family of Woodstock Comes to the Pantry’s Rescue Two Years in a Row

Family of Woodstock was a real lifesaver for our pantry those first two Decembers I was the coordinator.  The first year word spread that our shelves were empty.  I got a call from Tamara Cooper.

“Thurman, can you come over here immediately?  We just got a donation of food from someone and we have no place to put it.  If you come over right now, you can have it all.”

Can I come over immediately?  WOW  I was there!  It was glorious!  I stuffed my car with grocery bags filled with canned and boxed goods of every kind.  Thank you Tamara Cooper.
In October of the following year, I saw Michael Berg at a meeting at Mohonk Mountain House.  I went over to him, introduced myself, and told him that Decembers were grim in our pantry.  In December I got another call from Family.  This time we were given a large number of Hannaford’s holiday gift boxes filled with pasta, tomato sauce, tuna fish, chicken noodle soup, etc.  Thank you Michael Berg.  Thank you to everyone at Family of Woodstock.  Thank you to Hannaford’s.  And, thank you to everyone who buys a gift box of food for the hungry at Hannaford’s.

By 2010, I was ready for August and December.  I finagled a storeroom out of the building committee of the Woodstock Reformed Church.  I even got permission for a refrigerator to go in it.  The storeroom effort was a total scene – especially the refrigerator.  I got permission from the pastor’s secretary who gave me the go ahead because everyone was out of the building.

Looking back at the whole event, I realize that Divine Guidance removed everyone from the building that morning.  If anyone had been there the pantry would never have gotten even the storeroom…much less the refrigerator.  Thank you God.

Except for the stress that my presence in this space (which was severe) caused the building committee and church members, the storeroom was a wonderful addition to the pantry.  We were now able to order food for advance needs during lean months and the refrigerator, even though small, stored eggs.

The storeroom made all the difference.  As my grandmother would have said “We were cooking with gas over at the Good Neighbor Food Pantry”.
