An Open Letter to Tomo Jacobson

 

Thanks so much for writing to Chuck Klosterman of the New York Times about dumpster diving.  I appreciate your stand that dumpster diving is moral.  I also like  your question about whether it is ethically wrong to dumpster dive.  I never thought much about the ethics of dumpster diving before.

As a food pantry coordinator, I interact with people every week who dumpster dive to feed themselves as well as their children, parents, and housemates.  We can’t explore the ethics of dumpster diving without exploring the ethics of allowing people in our country to go hungry because they can’t make enough $$$ at their jobs to buy food.

People who come to the Reservoir Food Pantry take a 3-day supply of food home to wherever and whatever that is each week.  The other 4 days, they’re on their own.

That means they can buy the food if they have a SNAP card and if they can get to a store selling food.  If they don’t have either the $$$ or a SNAP card, then they must get creative.  That involves:

Panhandling

Borrowing $$$ from friends, relatives, neighbors

Showing up at someone’s house (friend, relative, neighbor) at mealtime

Sending the children to someone’s house (friend, relative, neighbor) at mealtime

Stealing and (of  course),

Dumpster Diving.

In Woodstock, NY, where I live, a beloved neighbor named  Cassia Berman routinely went dumpster diving for greens (kale, chard, collards).  Cassia was on the library board and taught Qigung at the community center.  She never made a fortune, certainly not enough to buy organic produce at the Sunflower Natural Foods Market.

Cassia felt  good nutrition was her best defense against illness.  I was always grateful for Cassia’s attitude.  She brought class to the whole hunger scene.

Ann King and the Food Drives at the Sunflower Natural Foods Market

Once a month pantry volunteers sat outside the entrance at the Sunflower Natural Foods Market asking for food.  One volunteer, Ann King, never came to the pantry to work but she was one of our most valuable volunteers.

Ann organized and managed our monthly food drive at the Sunflower Natural Foods Market.

Ann arranged the monthly date with Bob Whitcomb.

Ann scheduled the volunteers to come and sit at the table.

Ann had me arrive first on the day of the food drive with the table, chairs, sign, donation jar, and tent.  I set everything up outside the front door and stayed until other volunteers came to sit at the table.

Ann taught us to make eye contact with every person coming to the store.

Ann taught us to smile and tell them about the pantry and tell them what we needed.

Ann taught us to introduce ourselves to strangers, exchange names and memorize them for the next time the person came to the table.

The event was extremely important to our pantry because we got enough boxed almond (or soy, hemp) milk for the people shopping at the pantry to get a box when they visited the pantry.  Milk was a serious challenge for us because of our limited refrigeration situation.

When we needed it, we focused the food drive on cereal and received many bags of Arrowhead Mills puffed cereal.  In this way, Sunflower Natural Foods Market became an extension of the pantry.

The food drives were always held on Saturday.  After the food drive ended,  Barry went to the Sunflower with funds collected and purchased the food.  We picked it up on Tuesday morning when we could get it into the building.

We estimated once that Ann King’s efforts brought up $5000 worth of quality food every year.  Thank you to every person who visited our table and dropped money in our donation jar.  You helped a lot of people.

After several months of Sunflower fundraisers, Bob Otto joined in the effort.  He stood in the doorway of the Sunflower with a large milk pitcher and spoke to everyone coming in the door.  Bob was a one-person money generating machine.  He was polite, personal, professional.  No one could turn him down.  As the customers came to the door of the Sunflower, they opened their wallets.

Soon, Bob Otto was expanding his efforts to include a raffle sale one summer.  He spent every Saturday one whole summer in the Mower’s Meadow Flea Market entrance selling raffle tickets.  I sat at a small table beside him and helped the people sign the raffle tickets.  It was an amazing sight to watch.

We had food in the pantry in no small part due to the efforts of Ann and Bob.

Food Pantry Blog: The Silver Tongued Devil of the Food Pantry

Bob Otto came to volunteering through the back door.  He worked as the sexton of the Woodstock Reformed Church, a job he took very seriously.  It was, however, a parttime position and he volunteered at the pantry when he wasn’t working in the building.

Bob unloaded food when we had deliveries.

Bob worked to keep the line together in the hallway.

Bob distributed frozen food in the barn.

Bob raised funds for the pantry one summer at the entrance of the Mower’s Meadow Flea Market.  He stood there every Saturday and Sunday selling raffle tickets.  Singlehandedly, Box raised over $3,000.

Bob worked at our monthly food drives at the Sunflower Natural Foods Market.  He stood at the entrance of the Sunflower with a large milk pitcher and asked everyone who came to the door to make a donation.  The  people loved it.   They walked right up to him with their wallets and purses open.

As volunteers we all had our jobs cut out for us.  We called Bob our “Silver Tongued Devil.”

Beyond the work we gave,  the pantry encouraged us to leave the past behind.  Events in the pantry seemed to demand that we interact closely with people we didn’t even know.  Further, the pantry activities orchestrated healing on some level.  Then, as this happened, this transformation resulted in a new person.

And, for Bob, this was very real.  One day we heard an announcement.  The building committee members were unhappy with his performance.  Nobody ever determined whether he quit or was dismissed.  But what we did determine, however, was that his participation in food pantry activities was smack dab in the middle of the event.
